Ce n’est qu’après 1839， avec le roman historique La Comtesse de Salisbury et Édouard III， qu’il a fait ses débuts dans le monde du roman， où il captiverait plus tard le monde entier avec Les Trois Mousquetaires et Le Comte de Monte-Cristo.
